GMC Pinewood Derby
Let get behind this fun project!
We need racers. The block of wood that comes in the somewhat shape of a GMC must use as is supplied. The Kits that have been supplied to the GMCGL members use these dimensions. You can sand and reshape the edges but if you make it smaller than the original templet block then you can be put in the Modified racer category. Some of the GMCGL racers when way overboard in their shaping and finishing of the racers. The intent here is have fun racing your pinewood racer GMC. Walt Halley and Bob Swartz brought along a track to the Amana GMCMI Convention, and set it up to see what kind of interest there would be in having a pine box derby at the conventions. There seemed to be little interest at that time, but perhaps this thread will get it going. The track is very cumbersome to move around, so someone would have to come up with a track that is a little more portable. The GMC Great Lakers have been having a pinewood derby for at least three years. We all race our own pinewood GMC coaches. Some are very basic in finish and some are really well done. I was looking
for the pictures from the last meet but they escape me at this time. The Pine-Wood Derby was one of those "look forward to" events in cubs. Our troop got serious about it holding the regional finals on our tracks and sponsored the event. Our adults came up with an "unlimited" exibition class where I went nuts with a car looking like the Flintstones log with a 1/2 sec model rocket SRB connected to a battery powered igniter circuit complete with stager and LED status indicator. You just had to be there the first time it ran-- filled up the hall with smoke, set off detectors and bout had the fire department called! Did exibition runs for years after my sons moved on-- it was a draw of our Pack event. Jim Bounds (Sat 4/11/2009) GMC Great Lakers Individual clubs compete for International Trophies.
