Experience AGMCMI ConventionBY JANET FREY | MILFORD SQUARE, PA | 1976 PALM BEACHMany members of GMCMI belong to a “local” club. These regional clubs are a source of social activity and a chance to use the GMC on a regular basis. But, GMCMI offers something beyond the camaraderie, it provides “priceless” information and an opportunity to meet GMC owners from other areas of the country. It is called a CONVENTION.The meaning of the word conventionsounds very different from the actual eventas experienced by the members of theGMC Motorhome International. Yes, itis a meeting or gathering, and yes, we dohave discussions, and common concerns. However, the GMCMI conventions are much more. Since the conventions are held in different areas of the country, each event hasa distinct flavor, drawing from the location where the event is held and incorporatingits traditions and foods into the entire week. There are many opportunities to enjoy the local residents, but also spend time withthe people who come from all around the USA, Canada and even Australia! The six day international conventions provide members with a chance to participate in technical and non-technical sessions pertaining to the classic GMC Motorhome. In addition, sessionsare planned involving crafts, health issues, reading, photography, cooking and muchmore! The conventions always embody the Mission of the GMCMI: “GMC Motorhomes International is an organization dedicated to promoting the legacy, enjoyment and use of GMC Motorhomes. Our goal is to provide fellowship and technical information through continuous improvement of communications and conventions.”Past conventions have taken us fromFlorida to California and Wisconsin toTexas. Activities have included tours oflocal factories, historic theatres, a brewery and many other local attractions. Local entertainers have helped us laugh, dance and sing, and crafts taught by local artisans have given us treasures that will always provide fond memories. Of course, excursions involving food and entertainment have always been a highlight! Sightseeing in the different regions of the country has allowed us tosee such wonders as Mount Rushmore, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan (who knew?), the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Amish buggies in Indiana. Membershave taken side trips to caves, wineries and manufacturing plants. Museums, art galleries and historic sites are usually on a “to do” list. And, always find some time to just relax with local residents and enjoy! At the convention site, perhaps the most important aspect of the convention takes place. Technical sessions provide information on the many mysteries of the GMC, providing members with “priceless” opportunities tosee the breakdown of the engine, suspension and other critical systems, and speak with the experts regarding maintenance and repair. You can even have your GMC weighed! Also, there are vendors at the conventions who can provide help in obtaining parts, and many times have items on site for immediate “free” delivery.Non-technical sessions have educated us regarding hearing problems and other health issues, what to do with our “stuff” when planning our future, geocaching, how touse a smartphone, and other situations that impact our lives. Also, the crafts provide an opportunity to learn a new hobby, one that we can enjoy long after the convention and many times, something we can do while on the road! So, plan to come to a convention, and be ready to experience.4 GMC VINTAGE RVING MAGAZINE | GMCMI.COMcon-ven-tion (kon ven’ shen) n. meeting or formal assembly for discussion of an action on particular matters of common concern.
