Determined to find an early warning system, I went to the workshop and made my own curb feeler; a 21" long curb feeler. I proceeded to mount the curb feeler about 20" above the ground on the forward edge of the front wheel well, and the tip sweeps along about six inches above the ground. By using this extra long design, mounted much higher than the usual short curb feeler, you remove false alarms caused by bottoming out – that simply does not happen. The result is an early warning system that not only saves the expensive Alcoas, it also provides time to take corrective action on narrow bridges and other areas where the roadway sometimes gets unexpectedly tight. These curb feelers have saved my bacon more than once. For example, once in fast moving heavy traffic on the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, I got a bit too close to the right bridge railing and at 50 mph the curb feeler made quite a racket which caused me to take immediate corrective action. On another note,we were parked at a tourist attraction and I noticed a young Japanese couple admiring our coach. The young man approached just as we were leaving to ask a few questions and then warn me about that “funny wire” sticking out of my front fender.I have also finally found a supplier that provides the items necessary for me to make these extra long curb feelers, they will very soon be carried on the Applied GMC website (appliedgmc.com) for sale. It’s a Shady Business!Gary Coaster | Marysville, Michigan | 810-650-5111 | GMC RV ShadesMotorhome TidbitsSince purchasing the “Guske Coach” almost four years ago, Terry and I have had the opportunity to not only travel extensively and enjoy a great GMC Motorhome, but establish a wonderful relationship with Ken and Margaret Guske. They represent the true persona of the GMC Motorhome Community. This past fall we were asked to continue their shade business. It is an not only an honor to carry on the legacy of a cherished motorhome, but as the new owners of their shade business as well. We share their joy in being part of the GMC Great Lakers.Unfortunately, we have relocated to Reno, Nevada but will be back to Michigan this summer to spend three months.Gary and Terry CoasterMCMI.COM
