Previous GMCMI and GMC Great Lakers member Bob Sovis passed away on February 27, 2024. Bob worked at General Motors for 38 years. He founded the Sloan Museum Auto Fair and then in 1994 the Golden Memories Auto Show. Both shows raise money for Sloan Museum and still run every year. He donated his 1973 GMC Motorhome and 1986 Chevrolet Chevette Diesel to the National Auto and Truck Museum in Auburn, IN. Our condolences to Diane and the family. Click here for obituary.

GMCMI and GMC Dixielander member Peter Donaghue passed away unexpectedly on November 12, 2023. Albert and his wife, Nancy, owned a 1975 Glenbrook and enjoyed motorcyclying. In his retirement, he built a pottery studio in his home in Davisburg. He never sold his pottery, instead he found great joy in giving his pottery as gifts including donating pieces for the GMCMI auction and drawings. Our condolences to Nancy and the family. GMCMI and GMC Heritage Cruiser member Albert Branscombe passed away on August 18, 2023. Albert owned an antique 1978 GMC Motorhome for which he invented and patented a parking brake kit. Albert made and sold these kits all over the United States. This busy man enjoyed tinkering in his basement and the company of his family and friends. Longtime GMCMI member Larry Johnson passed away on March 3, 2023. He was a proud member of the American Bowling Association and GMC Motorhomes International and was an avid bowler. He has bowled 4 – Perfect ‘300’ games during his bowling career. For many years he travelled all over the country bowling in the National Bowling Tournament. Longtime GMCMI member Randy Johnson of St. George, Utah passed away on January 24, 2023, in St. George, Utah after a 3-month battle with a Glioblastoma brain tumor. He was also a member of the GMC Midwest Classics. Click here for obituary.

Longtime GMCMI member Bob Burkitt of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away on January 21, 2023 after suffering a stroke on Dec. 30. He was also a member of the GMC Eastern States and GMC Dixielanders. Bob had purchased the jigs and fixtures for the famous Birch Screen Door from Alex Birch and was assisting the GMC Community in maintaining the doors. Services will be held sometime in the spring when his West Coast relatives are able to attend.

Longtime GMCMI member Joe Johnson of St. George, Utah passed away on October 12, 2022, in the Veteran’s Home in Ivins, Utah. He was drafted into the Navy November 1942 and served for two years on the USS Enterprise during World War II receiving nine battle stars. He was also a member of the GMC Midwest Classics. Out of a need in the GMC Community they secured and sold aluminum radiators and the line of windows that featured sliding windows on the lower across the lower portion while leaving a one-piece pane on the upper two-thirds. Ken Henderson posted on the gmc forum the following: At moments like this, I always remember a tombstone I once saw with the inscription, “From the necklace of life, the shining jewels slowly drop away.”  These men are the latest of the many jewels we have lost from the GMC Community.

Paul Burkhart passed on June 19, 2016. Please keep Bonnie and the family in your prayers. Here is a few words from the obituary as published in the Pueblo, Colorado “Chieftain”, June 19, 2016.
 
Paul is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Burkhart. Paul was a cabinet maker who evolved with the cabinet industry into a kitchen and bath designer who worked on many of Pueblo’s most beautiful homes. A talented woodworker he created and turned many beautiful wood bowls treasured by his family and friends. Paul and Bonnie traveled throughout the country in their GMC Motorhome for many years. For his 90th birthday, his family went on a cruise to Alaska, the one place he never went to in the motorhome. No viewing. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers or food, memorials can be sent to the church of your choice.

It is with a heavy heart in posting this, that we lost one of our own, Dwayne Jacobson. He fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed on this morning. He was President of the GMC Cascaders before stepping down due to his illness. He was instrumental in planning the GMC across Canada and the Route 66 trip. He was a wonderful and kind person and touched everyone who knew him. He loved the GMC and the community. He is loved and will be missed. Dads service is going to be THIS Saturday the 20th at 2:00 pm at Life Church White Rock 2265 152nd Street Surrey. Please feel free to share so all that loved dad can come. Thank you all. RIP Dwayne. Another of our old-time GMC’ers passed away this week. In years past, Judi and Carl Tompkins were very active in the GMC community until having to give up their beloved GMC. Alex Sirum and Carl have been friends since high school; thankfully Alex and Romona had stopped and visited with Carl & Judi on their journey home from Mass. after Alex’s health issues this summer.


>> 1-19-2016 | David Lopez

David Lopez, a long-time member of GMCMI and the Pacific Cruisers, passed away in late October 2015. David served in WWII as a navy pilot, flying off the aircraft carrier, USS Corregidor. He remained in the Navy Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. He is survived by his wife, Beverly. A memorial for him was held on November 6, 2015 and was attended by many
of the Pacific Cruisers. Beverly still has their coach and we hope to see her bringing it out and joining us at a rally.
