One of the events held at most GMCMI Conventions is the GMC Pineblock Derby.

Very similar to the Boy Scouts’ Pinewood Derby but we are racing miniature GMC Motorhomes.

It is a must see event!

>> GMCMI Pineblock Derby Rules

Nominal Wood Block Size – 2 3/4″ x 2 3/4″ x 9 1/2″. Minimum width and body height allowed in the stock class is 2 1/2” and minimum length is 9 1/4″.

Special note: shorter lengths to simulate a 23’ coach will be allowed unless they show an advantage in which case they will need to be in a separate class, but it is anticipated they will be slower.

Wheels (6) – 1 1/4″ maximum diameter, tread width less than 1/2″. Wheel spread must be greater than 1 1/2″ and less than 1 3/4″. Unmodified Pinewood derby racing wheels ref. # P347 provided are the ONLY wheels allowed in the stock class.

Coach Clearance – Minimum clearance is 3/8′′ due to track center guide. Can be more than 3/8″ if you wish.

Starting Devices – Coach must be free wheeling. No special starting devices are allowed. When placing racers onto track, at least 3 wheels must be touching.

Maximum Weight – One Pound

Painting – Like your GMC motor home, but it is your choice. However for best results apply several coats of sanding sealer and sand with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by two coats of paint, then a coat of wax and polish.

Axle – Washers should be placed between the wheel and the coach. Note the axle grooves are a bit deeper than necessary. Axles may be attached with a thick adhesive such as RTV, hot melt glue or screws. Axles can be realigned more easily if held in place with washer screw heads. Make sure they are located parallel to each other and square to the body. Not all original grooves were cut perfectly square and can be easily modified with a sharp utility knife. Axles must be the same as provided in the kit – no special axle modification will be allowed.

Lubricants – NO liquids or sprays – (they make the track messy). Dry types only will be allowed.

Classes – Specified stock class rules will be checked at “check-in”. All rules are waived for unlimited class.

Additional Race Rules – Everyone must have their own wooden GMC Motorhome racer. Pineblock Derby driver/person will be recognized as the place winners and not the wooden GMC Motorhome owner. Decision of the judges is final.
